Kelulut honey, aka Trigona honey is produced by tiny Trigona stingless bees. Kelulut honey has a mix of sweet and sour profile and is silky smooth in taste.
Trigona bees usually make their hives in tree stump of in crevices between roots, may it be in the wild or farmed. The nests are not the usual honeycomb of hexagonal shaped structure but a jumble of uneven size conjoined honeypots in intricate arrangements. These pots are manufactured by the bees using plant resins to store honey and pollen. Honey is harvested by puncturing holes in the pods to drain out the honey or with a sucking device.
Trigona bees are tiny in size, (almost the size a fly) hence, its ability to suck nectar from flowers in deep and tight spaces which contain high minerals and vitamins properties. The end result is premium honey of superior benefits. Kelulut honey has a wide range of antimicrobial activity against various types of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Several studies have indicated Kelulut honey’s high antioxidant activity from its abundant flavonoids and polyphenols content.
